Mind's Eye Fiction was one of the very first on-line fiction publishers, using a model where browsers could read the first part of a story for free, but had to either pay a small sum or click through advertising to read the conclusion.

Alas, they no longer exist. They were bought out by Alexandria Digital Literature, and maintained a separate site for a time, but they're gone completely now.
