The Spriggan Mirror
The book that began it all.

...so what is this place?

In April 2005, on a whim, I started serializing a novel called The Spriggan Mirror on the web, taking donations to justify the time and effort I was putting into it.

It worked a whole lot better than I expected, and after it was finished I decided to do it again. I did, and when that worked, too, I decided to branch out a little.

This time I wanted to set up a more permanent home for my online fiction, and add some nice little extras -- make it a place people would want to come back to regularly. Not just a weekly serial, but a whole website's worth of cool stuff. Something a little like a webzine, a little like a library.

I came up with a name for it, and here we are.

In addition to Misenchanted Tales, I'm maintaining the Serial Box, a blog where I report on whatever serials I'm working on. There's also, at least in theory, Serial Universe, a central location where readers can find ongoing serials by several authors.

Misenchanted Tales will generally have links to any and all serials I'm writing, any I've finished that are still available, and any other cool stories I've added. What's more, in a spirit of writerly fellowship, I'll link to any other reader-supported serials I know about, and selected webzines I think deserve attention.

I sometimes do little seasonal extras -- Hallowe'en or Christmas stories, for example. I may add some jokes, games, whatever. It's not a webzine because it won't have a set schedule; it's not exactly a library, either, since stories may come and go. There may be new stories, there may be reprints. I intend to be the sole arbiter of what's on it, and to include anything I think is cool that I can get the rights to. I'm letting it accumulate.

If you think you've written a story that would fit in here, let me know. Don't expect to get rich, though -- after two years, the total money received from Misenchanted Tales hasn't been enough to take my wife out to dinner. This is for fun, not money.

(If it did make money, I'd put more effort into it.)

Any PayPal donations are gladly accepted. If they're made with the button on a story page, the money will all go to the author of that story; if they're made with the button on the front page, the money will be divided among all the authors with stories on this site at the time. (I'm afraid I'm not quite generous enough to give shares to Phil and Kaja Foglio for Girl Genius, or to Diane Duane for The Big Meow, or whoever else I might link to.)

You can also send checks to:

Feel free to include a note specifying how much is for whom; I'll be happy to divvy up the money appropriately.

And that's it. That's what this is. Enjoy!
