The Final Challenge

The Book of KingsI am not a monarchist. The observant reader will notice that I have relatively few kings and queens cluttering up my fantasy stories, and the ones who do appear are almost never heroic.

So why did I write a story for The Book of Kings?

Because I'd had the idea for the story, based on the proverb "Old age and treachery beats youth and skill every time," kicking around my desk for ages. It wasn't necessarily going to be about a king, but making him one fit perfectly, so I went with it.

I wrote it and Richard Gilliam bought it and the check didn't bounce, so I'm happy.
