Chaperone

Prom Night

I got invited to submit a story to Nancy Springer's anthology Prom Night, and decided I'd give it a shot. The only catch was, I didn't go to my prom, nor did most of my friends -- we were the dirty hippie freaks and didn't want anything to do with an archaic ritual like a high school prom.

So I had to do some research.

I also thought I should to go for farce -- I didn't see any other way to play it, given my own history. And since I had trouble imagining myself as wanting to go to prom, I figured I should use one of the chaperones as my viewpoint character.

Then I needed a plot, and someone asking multiple dates to the prom is a classic. So there it was -- "Chaperone" developed naturally from that.

Nancy bought it, and here we are.
