Best Present Ever!

Best Present Ever!

We've been creating our own holiday cards since the early 1980s -- not every year, but most. Most of these cards, though, have been cards, relying on art or a gag of some sort.

I've always thought, though, that since I'm a writer, I ought to write something to send to our friends -- something more than a cheap gag. One year I did write a dreadful little Feghootish thing, but for a long time I just didn't have the time or inspiration.

In 2007 I decided it was time to write a real story for our card, and that was "The God in Red." We produced a chapbook and sent that out as our card.

And in 2011 I did it again, and wrote "Best Present Ever!"

This time, though, as well as sending out chapbooks to our family and close friends, I made it available as an ebook on Smashwords. I sent the folks on my email lists a code to read it for free, and anyone else who wanted to could download it for 99 cents.

It's still there, if you'd like to read it: click here. I've also included it in my collection The Final Folly of Captain Dancy & Other Tall Tales.

The cover line art is by our daughter Kiri; I colored it myself. She did it because after all, it was the card for the whole family, not just me.

(The next story card was "The Abduction of Ebenezer Scrooge," in 2015. I don't know whether we'll ever do any more.)
