Girl Cooties
I have a full beard. It's going grey. It's going grey in a pattern that looks, well... stupid. It's grey on the sides, with a still-brown stripe partway down the middle, as if I've been drooling tobacco juice.
So Julie suggested I might color it, not so much to hide my age as to make it look less like I spilled gravy on it. By coincidence, I got a coupon for Just For Men hair color in the mail the other day, so today I went to the local pharmacy and looked in the hair-color aisle.
No Just For Men; no Grecian Formula; nothing aimed at the male consumer. Hundreds upon hundreds of brightly-colored boxes showing women with hair in assorted colors, including many never seen in nature; nothing for men.
After a moment's thought, inspiration strikes -- I ask a clerk where the shaving supplies are. She directs me two aisles over, and sure enough, amid the Mach3 Turbo razors and other machismo-drenched products, I find a decent selection of Just For Men.
The fact that it's hair color is less important than the fact that it's for manly men, who wouldn't ever set foot in the girly-girly, cooties-infested hair color aisle.
Sigh. Humans are so silly.

Ok, you want comments, how's this. Has it occurred to you that the two-toned effect is just a little "wizardly"? Given your affinity and talent for creating the mental images of wizards in your writing, is it any wonder that the magic of the world has seen fit to manifest you with the appearance of one? Just a thought.
Thanks and keep writing (a lot).
Interesting. A wizard with a beard of tobacco drool... smooth...real smooth.
I wish it looked wizardly; when the gray first appeared it did, but right now it really looks like spilled gravy. I'm hoping it'll shift pattern again, but for now, I'm looking for hair color.
Would you prefer it if the grey and dark were reversed? Would you consider it a viable option to simply shave the offensive section (assuming it's in a sufficiently symmetric location)?
I also wear a full beard and when people comment that I am going grey on my chin, and why don't I just yank out the grey hairs, I just tell them that the grey doesn't bother me, since it doesn't. If it did, I would more likely than not just shave my chin but leave the rest of the beard. It's enough of an oddity that it appeals to me and not too much work that it would bug me overmuch.
Coloring's easier.
At 14, I had a streak of grey above my forehead such that if I brushed my hair back, you'll see a 1/2 inch streak above my right eye. At that age, it used to be 'cool'. When I turned 30, a second streak came above my left eye. This made them looked more like horns. (not cool) I had the same debate about hair color & found more choices marketed for women than men. My decision was simple. I see bald men, I hardly notice any bald women. I'll go with the girly product!
Anyway, not reading the contents of the box carefully enough, I choose a lighter color than my natural color. Comments I got was 'nice highlights'. Now, my highlights are gone since the grey streaks have more of less grew together like weeds.
So, would you be open to the idea of leaving a streak of grey in the beard?
lol well at least you have hair! So many guys dont have the option of coloring because there isn't anything to color.
